Latest Release from Rugby PA

29 Mar 2020 by Lauren Shissler

To all the teams, coaches, parents, players, and referees who are concerned about the current impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 Spring season:

Pennsylvania has been hit harder by this crisis than many, and we can’t help but think of all of those in the Rugby PA family. Not being able to enjoy the sport that we all love has been difficult, but the understanding has been that there are more important issues at this time. As of March 20th, USA Rugby has suspended all practice and games until May 31, 2020. This decision has resulted in the likely cancellation of the Spring competition schedule for Rugby PA.

With the fluidity of the situation, we are working with multiple entities who can help ensure we make the appropriate decisions for our teams, players, and organization. This includes adhering to all directions from the CDC and State leadership, as well as working with USA Rugby, PIAA, and other State Rugby Organizations to share information and resources moving forward.

The actions of USA Rugby as the national governing body will affect the timing and economics of a shortened or cancelled spring season. Rugby PA will take the necessary time to evaluate all options and mechanisms for any potential modifications to the competition schedule, refunds, or credits for the Spring 2020 season.

The USA Rugby registration costs have already been paid and are not under control of Rugby PA. Rugby PA has also incurred preliminary seasonal costs and other fixed annual administrative costs. In addressing the possibility of refunding registration fees, the Rugby PA Board has been looking into several potential scenarios. The Board of Directors appreciates your patience as we navigate these unique times.

We are aware of the circumstances surrounding many of our families, and will act in a fair and equitable manner to those players who will experience a diminished or cancelled season. The Rugby PA Board is looking to formalize next steps for the organization and its membership in the coming weeks. Our goal is to make it through these difficult times, and ensure the organization and all our clubs are able to return for a full 2020-2021 season. Please stay safe and follow the guidelines set by government officials. We look forward to seeing everyone on a rugby pitch again soon.
